The keynote speakers at the 4th Annual Virginia Healthcare Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) will be Rep. Michael Burgess, MD of the 26th District of Texas who will speak on behalf of the John McCain Presidential Campaign and Blackford Middleton, MD of Partners Healthcare System who will speak on behalf of the Barack Obama Presidential Campaign. “These keynote speakers will provide unique insights into how each Presidential administration will address healthcare information technology issues, if they were to be elected” says Colin Konschak, Past President of Virginia HIMSS and Managing Partner with DIVURGENT.
This key event attracts over 250 senior level healthcare stakeholders from across Virginia including clinicians, Information Technology executives, directors and managers who work in leading healthcare provider institutions, payer organizations, the military and other branches of government, and supplier and consulting companies. Other presentations of interest include a panel session with the Chief Information Officers of Virginia’s major healthcare providers and a presentation from Virginia’s Secretary of Technology, Aneesh Chopra where he will discuss Virginia’s healthcare technology strategies. David Meritt, Center for Health Transformation, will discuss the themes of his award winning book – Paper Kills.
National HIMSS awarded David Merritt with the “Book of the Year Award” for its outstanding practical guidance and strategic insight for healthcare information and management systems professionals.

David is a project director at the Center for Health Transformation and the Gingrich Group. The Center, headed by former Speaker Newt Gingrich, is a collaboration of leaders dedicated to transforming health and healthcare in America. David advises Speaker Gingrich and leads the Center’s projects on health information technology and expanding coverage to the uninsured, with additional work in Medicare, consumerism, and transparency.
Edited by David Merritt and featuring an introduction by former U.S. House Speaker and CHT Founder Newt Gingrich, "Paper Kills" addresses the most pressing issues in the drive to modernize and improve healthcare through health information technology. The 2008 VA HIMSS Golf Tournament will be held on The Woods Course this year. The Woods Course is an interesting mix of long and short holes. It is cut out of the Virginia pines in a secluded corner of the Kingsmill resort. It is a 6, 659 yard, par 72 course. The woods course was ranked #10 of Virginia Top Ten Courses by Golfweek Magazine. This clasic parkland style course was designed by Tom Clark and two-time U.S. Open winner Curtis Strange.
A shuttle will be provided at the entrance of Eagles Restaurant at The Kingsmill Resort to bring you to the registration area at the beginning of the Woods course. There will be a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m., and an awards reception in the evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. This is an incredible networking opportunity and an excellent kickoff to the annual conference. Golf participants will receive a complimentary VA HIMSS bag filled with promotional items provided by the sponsors of the 2008 Annual Conference.
