Fellow Virginia Healthcare Professionals:

I am very excited to serve as this year’s President of the Virginia HIMSS Chapter. It has never been a more exciting time to be part of health IT.

The new board met last week to discuss our chapter goals and events for the coming year. Our major focus will be to provide our members with up to date information on Health IT topics taking place at both the federal and state level including funding provided in ARRA, the definition of “meaningful use”, and healthcare reform. We will achieve this by providing communication thru our news letter, emails and social networking.

Our advocacy activities will include hosting Virginia’s fourth annual State Advocacy Day in January, participating in the HIMSS 8th Annual Policy Summit in D.C. on September 22-23, 2009 and providing update communications.

This year’s annual conference will be held at the Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg October 14th – October 16th. Presentation topics will include ARRA, ePrescribing and healthcare reform as well as health IT updates from state representatives. The CIO Roundtable will take place on Friday, and new this year a CMO Roundtable is scheduled for Thursday. Please mark your calendars to join us October 14th – October 16th.

New Uses of Health IT to Improve Customer Service, Increase Revenue, and Protect the Environment

Is your healthcare facility looking for ways to improve customer service, increase revenue, and promote a cleaner, healthier environment through health information technology? If so, the Social Security Administration (SSA) can assist you with those needs.

Annually SSA requests over 15 million records a year on behalf of patients filing for disability benefits. To expedite and reduce the costs of the record request and submission process, SSA developed secure electronic processes that your facility can employ free of charge that require no additional use of resources or special skill sets. Also, the processes are environmentally friendly.

Healthcare facilities can receive record requests through SSA’s secure Web site or via fax. Records can then be faxed to DDS using a toll-free number or uploaded through SSA’s Electronic Records Express (ERE) Web site. All facilities can participate regardless of whether records are stored electronically or in paper form.

To learn more about these electronic processes, please contact Shawn Wray, Marketing Specialist Virginia Disability Determination Services, at 804-662-7341, via e-mail at shawn.wray@ssa.gov, or go on-line at http://www.ssa.gov/ere/.
