Mid-Atlantic Networking Reception
Orlando Convention Center, Feb. 2011

On February 22, 2011 VA HIMSS participated in a Mid-Atlantic Networking Reception at HIMSS11 in the CSC Booth at the Orlando Convention Center.

We co-hosted the reception with the HIMSS chapters from North Carolina and West Virginia, with over 180 attendees. This was a great opportunity to learn about other chapters, industry activities, reconnect with colleagues and make new connections. Fun was had by all, especially with our "High Four" social network devices!
Thanks to all that attended. Special thanks to CSC, Standard Register and everyone involved that made the successful event happen!

Please stay tuned for plans at HIMSS12 in Las Vegas.

Advocacy Day 2011
Virginia HIMSS held it’s 5th annual Virginia HIMSS Day at the General Assembly on February 1 at the MCV Alumni House.

Virginia HIMSS held it’s 5th annual Virginia HIMSS Day at the General Assembly on February 1 at the MCV Alumni House.

Our first speaker was the CMIO from the Bon Secours Health System – the presentation reviewed the tranformational outcomes that have taken place with the implementation of EHRs. Based on the information that was presented, there was a decline in door to doc time, early evaluation for chest pain and a decline in Emergency Department length of stay. Inpatient CMS Scores were stable and trending upward. There was a decline in mortality and complications along with a decline in the adjusted length of stay.

Our next speaker Dr. Kay Stout, the 2009 HIMSS Ambulatory Davies Award Winner, spoke of their use of EHR and the strong acceptance by physicians. The key factors to success were Patient Care and safety at the forefront of all decisions. Additonally, workflow re-design and the dedication of resources were also important factors.

This was a co-sponsored event with CHIME. CHIME organized a well received CIO Panel. CIO's presented their views on the Health Information Exchange.

Updates from Virginia’s Health and Human Resources were presented by Kim Barnes, Director of Virginia's office of Health IT and Cindi Jones, Director of Virginia Health Reform Initiative. The Virginia Health Reform Initiative Advisory Council worked from August to December 2010 and developed a strategic plan for reforming the health care delivery system in Virginia.

Kim Barnes spoke of an $11.6 Million for Health Information Exchange. The state’s HIE plan has been approved by the ONC. The state will release a RFP very soon. The structure of the HIE will be to establish a certification and authorization process to evaluate potential certified HIEs on the COV-HIE network, a standardized gates for access to all state health related resources.

A legislative training session was held explaining how to discuss the current Health IT legislation with their state representatives. Attendees then walked to the General Assembly, and located their Representative's office and spoke to the aide or Representative. VA HIMSS members then visited the General Assembly and held meetings with their representatives or staff members.

SAVE THE DATE: VA HIMSS FALL ANNUAL CONFERENCE

The VA HIMSS Annual Fall Conference has received excellent feedback each year in regards to the sponsorship experience at The Kingsmill Resort. We want to offer you an opportunity to maximize your exposure at this conference and to demonstrate your company's leadership role in the healthcare IT industry in Virginia.

Support by sponsors has ensured the success of our past meetings and will enable us to offer valuable and affordable educational programming for VA HIMSS attendees. To bring you the best value for your sponsorship dollars, we have restructured our sponsorship program and added new opportunities to meet face-to-face with members. Sponsorship space is limited to maintain the intimate atmosphere of the VA HIMSS Conference.

The VA HIMSS board has been able to improve the sponsorship program this year based on all of the feedback and suggestions received. Please click on the link below for complete information on the 2011 Sponsorship Program.
